How does the handrail fit together with a Fixed Straight Spline?

Insert one end of the spline into a section of handrail, and use a mallet to drive it in place. Slide the second piece of handrail over the exposed end of the spline and tap the two pieces together with the mallet. Secure both sides with screws on the underside of the handrail for a clean, firm connection.

Is a post required underneath the spline?

No post is needed under a structural spline, as it provides support. As long as your posts are spaced no more than 8 feet apart, you can add splines wherever necessary to connect the handrail.
