What Is the Difference Between Floating and Fixed Spacer Bars?

Floating: secured to the cables with (2) locking set screws. Use on a maximum span of 7 feet.
Fixed: secures to the underside of your top rail. Extend the length of your spacing even further, with a maximum span of 8 feet.

Maintaining the beauty of your stainless steel or aluminum railings is simple! For routine cleaning, you only need a mild dish soap solution and a soft microfiber cloth. Wipe down the railings to remove dust, dirt, and fingerprints. For tougher grime, a vinegar solution (equal parts vinegar and water) can be used. Avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive cleaners, and steel wool, as these can damage the surfaces. Remember to rinse thoroughly and dry with a clean cloth to prevent water spots.

Can Spacer Bars be cut down?

Cutting the Spacer Bar is not recommended and will void the warranty. Removing one end of a Spacer Bar to shorten it will remove one of the locking set screws, causing the bar to slide and allow for cable deflection.

What material are Spacer Bars made from?

Spacer Bars are crafted from corrosion-resistant and durable T316 stainless steel.

Can I use Spacer Bars if my cables are spaced 4” apart?

No, Spacer Bars are not suitable for use with cables spaced 4” apart. The design will only allow for you to space your cables every 3”—the optimal cable spacing to pass building codes.

Do Spacer Bars provide structural support?

Fixed Spacer Bars add some additional cable support but are not a replacement for line (or pass-through) posts. A Fixed Spacer Bar provides enough cable support for roughly one extra foot of allowable spacing between posts—but it will not provide any additional support for your handrail.

Can Spacer Bars be added after installation?

Spacer Bars need to be installed at the same time cables are run. The cable pass-through channels within the Spacer Bar are not large enough to allow the crimped cable to pass through. For this reason, you must run all of your cable through the Spacer Bar before making your final cable crimp and tensioning your cables.

Are Spacer Bars compatible with stairs?

Yes, Floating and Fixed Spacer Bars can be installed on both level and sloped runs. The installation process and cable deflection support will be the same for each application.

Can Spacer Bars move back and forth?

Our Floating Spacer Bars come with (2) set screws—one for the top and bottom cable. If you advance these screws, the Spacer Bars will remain in place and won’t shift unless the screws are loosened, allowing you to place your Spacer Bar where you want, and lock it in place.

How many feet before another Spacer Bar is needed?

Spacer Bars are typically spaced every 4 feet between supporting posts. E.g., post, 4 feet, Spacer Bar, 4 feet, and another post. Spacer Bars only support the cables, and for cable railing projects you need both cable and handrail support.
