Cutting through a top-quality metal like stainless steel is no easy feat. You need to know how to use the right equipment safely. This includes choosing what kind of saw blade to use, how to de-burr the handrail post-cut, removing discoloration, and more.

Tools & Equipment Needed

  • Miter band saw
  • Fine-tooth metal-cutting blade
  • Hand file to de-burr the ends/edges
  • Tape measure
  • Pencil/Permanent marker for marking cut lines
  • Buffer or polishing pad to remove discoloration without scratching
  • Safety goggles, face mask, and work gloves
  • How to Cut Stainless Steel Handrail Step-by-Step

Step 1: Measure & Mark Your Cut Lines

Once you put on your safety gear, assemble your tools. Take your tape measure and marker and measure your cut lines.

    Step 2:  Cut Your Handrails

Turn on your saw and, once it reaches the desired speed, hold it firm and apply steady pressure, ensuring the speed remains slow to help prevent discoloration as you make each cut. Repeat this step for each of your handrails.

    Step 3: De-burr & Polish

Take your hand file and deburr each cut end, rotating the handrail to achieve an even finish. If you spot any signs of discoloration, use your buffer pad to remove it. Polish and buff each handrail to achieve your desired results.

    Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Always choose a saw suitable for cutting stainless steel.
  • Avoid using a saw blade that isn’t sharp or could otherwise give you a rough cut/edges, damaging your handrails.
  • Find a Handrail That’s a Cut Above the Rest!
