How to Install Surface Mount Deck Posts

Surface mount (aka, top mount) deck posts are one of the most common (and traditional) posts you can choose for your deck project. They come in several materials, including wood and stainless steel. You install them directly onto the surface of your deck, making them especially ideal if you’re working with a lot of square footage. Surface mount posts are also popular for their easy installation process and low price point.

Installing a surface mount post to your deck is straightforward. Here is a basic run-down of everything you’ll need!

Materials & Tools

The tools and materials you need vary depending on the requirements of your project. You can expect to use the following:

  • Deck posts of choice
  • Structural screws
  • Anchoring hardware (e.g., anchors, washers, etc.)
  • Allen wrench (if necessary)
  • Hand drill
  • Drill bits (size depending on your project)
  • Level
  • Tape measure
  • Pencil or mark for post and screw placement
  • How to Install Surface Mount Deck Posts Step-by-Step

    Step 1: Determine Post Placement

Once you determine your post’s placement, you’ll need to mark the spot for each structural screw that will anchor it in place.

Step 2: Drill Your Pilot Holes

Your deck surface (materials) and the posts you’ve chosen will dictate the size and depth of each pilot hole.

Step 3: Set Your Mounting Screws

Simply set each mounting screw (without fully screwing them down) and then level your post. This step can be made easier with the use of post leveling plates.

    Step 4: Secure Mounting Screws

Either use your drill or an appropriate Allen Wrench to advance your screws, ensuring it’s level.

Tips and Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Before you begin, refer to the International Residential Code (IRC) and other relevant local codes in your area.
  • Always wear proper safety gear.
  • Ensure your deck can sustain the weight/load of your deck posts (and the entire project).
  • Always double-check your measurements and spacing before securing posts in place.
